What Is an Outpatient Drug Rehab?

When you have an addiction that requires treatment, an outpatient rehab is a possible option. Typically, those enrolled in an outpatient treatment program will not need to be monitored on a consistent basis. Now this doesn’t mean that outpatient drug rehab offers less valuable services. In fact, 35 percent of people with a mild to moderate addiction will reap benefits from an outpatient program.

In order to determine if outpatient rehab is right for you, you must know what services are provided and what types of addictions will benefit from these services.

Outpatient Drug Rehab Therapy

Outpatient drug rehab treatments offer a number of different types of classes as well as counseling. It is designed to be very supportive rather than intensively therapeutic in nature.  There are three primary types of outpatient treatments:

  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Family therapy

What to Expect at Outpatient Programs

Outpatient drug rehab treatments are developed to help people fully get off drugs. To that end, they work on determining what type of emotional and psychological pulls make it difficult for people to stop using drugs and then attempt to offer then help to prevent relapse.  It often helps when an individual is able to identify why they are using drugs, specifically the triggers, experiences and/or wrong thought patterns that cause them to turn to drugs. This will help provide them with the ammunition they need to finally get off drugs. These types of things might be covered in one-on-one counseling sessions or group therapy sessions.

You will be able to continue receiving services from outpatient programs for as long as you need them. Some of the treatment models that are included in an outpatient program are:

  • Medical
  • Therapeutic
  • Holistic
  • 12-step
  • Relapse prevention
  • Life skills
  • Mental health treatment
  • Re-socialization skills

The purpose of these services is to support the social, emotional and psychological needs you may have throughout the long-term recovery process.

Outpatient programs will offer you a high success rate. While the exact rate will vary from one person to another, studies have shown that eight in 10 people receiving treatment at an outpatient program will show dramatic improvements and more than half of the patients will remain sober for at least one year after they complete the program.
